Wormont
Dairy is a family-owned dairy located in scenic central New York, milking
approximately 200 Registered Holsteins and 30 Registered Jerseys. We are
passionate about the registered business and our focus is on a progressive
breeding program, utilizing the best genetics available to improve the quality
of our herd with each generation.
Wormont was originally established in 1978 by Chuck and Vanessa, in Windsor,
NY. We milked 80 Registered Holsteins cows in a tie-stall barn, with an
emphasis on developing high index cattle and selling bulls into A.I. Over 100
bulls went to stud from that farm, with the most prominant being Wormont
Dracula-ET. In 1993, wanting to experience new challenges and a different side
of the industry, we made the decision to sell the farm in New York and
re-located to Lovington, New Mexico. In New Mexico, we ran a 1,400 cow herd,
composed primarily of registered and identified Holsteins, with about 100
Jerseys. The large dry lot operation allowed us to gain a great deal of experience
in managing cattle. While we enjoyed the western style of dairying, we missed
the strong registered breeder community in New York. In 2004, our family moved
back to New York, to our current location. We continued to run the dairy in New
Mexico for 3 years after moving, before it was sold in 2007.
Today,
the cows are housed in a four-row freestall barn, divided into four
groups. We milk in a DairyMaster swing-11 parlor, twice a day.
We are very proud to have all
four of our children actively involved in the farm; Wayne, Mark and Eric all
work on the farm full time, and Lindsey helps on the farm when she can, and
enjoys staying involved working with our genetic and marketing program.
